Pastime Place and Green Living

This place is my favorite summer’s evening retreat. Sometime the evening is still hot after an equally hot afternoon. At times the ambience through the grass isn’t that windy for a quick relief and so we will sit on the grass and enjoy the relentlessly chirping home bound birds at evening in the gulmohar tree at the corner of the field opposite to the fast food stalls where the office workers stop by for their evening snack.

When its windy it is a blissful place to soak in the summer aroma. During monsoon the grass is wet and so getting a place on the bench is incredibly difficult. Yet we wait and when spot a vacant bench we run towards it only to be outrun by someone else. We wait to occupy the next vacant bench which we successfully do after outrunning other people. And when it comes pouring, the row of ashoka trees gives us shelter from rain.

During important matches seats are brought in and people come in from across the area to enjoy the matches at the large screen fit at the Rabindra Mancha.

Sometimes in absence of benches we sit on the moist grass teasing each other of the insects that might be crawling on our back in absence of our attention or an eye behind our heads. During spring, awestruck we keep counting the yellow bloom of the Golden Shower Tree.

Kids accompanied by their fathers on Sundays practice football. Elders often finish two or three rounds of the park, jogging and running before they leave for home. And we come back here again and again, having our chilled orange ice candy on a summer evening. My favorite place- Because the moon looks bright and clear from this open park field.
